Mexico and Canada Strike Back Against US Tariffs

Mexico and Canada have announced retaliatory measures in response to tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump, escalating trade tensions between the nations.

President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico declared on Saturday that her country would implement its own tariffs and other measures against U.S. imports. In her announcement, Sheinbaum firmly rejected Washington's accusations that her government has alliances with drug trafficking groups, labeling them as \"slander.\"

This retaliation follows President Trump’s order to impose tariffs on imports from Mexico, Canada, and China. In a detailed post on X, Sheinbaum emphasized that her administration does not seek confrontation with the United States but rather aims for collaboration and dialogue.

\"We categorically reject the White House's slander that Mexican government has alliances with criminal organizations, as well as any intention of meddling in our territory,\" Sheinbaum wrote. She also highlighted her government’s efforts since taking office in October, including the seizure of 20 million doses of the deadly synthetic opioid fentanyl and the detention of over 10,000 individuals linked to drug trafficking.

In a similar move, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that Canada would impose 25 percent tariffs on C$155 billion ($106.5 billion) worth of U.S. goods. Of this, C$30 billion worth of goods would be subject to tariffs starting Tuesday, with the remaining C$125 billion implemented over the next 21 days, Trudeau stated during a news conference on Saturday.

The escalating trade measures from Mexico and Canada come amid broader global economic uncertainties, potentially impacting international markets and economic relations in the region.
