Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum declared on Saturday that Mexico will retaliate against the tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump. Sheinbaum outlined plans to introduce its own tariffs and implement other measures in response to the recent trade actions.
In her announcement, Sheinbaum vehemently rejected Washington's allegations that her administration has formed alliances with drug trafficking groups, labeling the accusations as \"slander.\"
This statement follows President Trump’s directive to impose tariffs on imports from Mexico, Canada, and China, escalating tensions between the neighboring countries.
Sheinbaum took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to emphasize that her government does not seek confrontation with the United States. Instead, she advocated for collaboration and dialogue to resolve the ongoing trade disputes.
\"We categorically reject the White House's slander that the Mexican government has alliances with criminal organizations, as well as any intention of meddling in our territory,\" Sheinbaum wrote in her lengthy post.
Highlighting her administration’s achievements since taking office in October, Sheinbaum mentioned the seizure of 20 million doses of the deadly synthetic opioid fentanyl and the detention of over 10,000 individuals linked to drug trafficking operations.
In related developments, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that Canada would impose a 25 percent tariff on C$155 billion ($106.5 billion) worth of U.S. goods in retaliation to the U.S. tariffs. Trudeau specified that C$30 billion worth of goods would be subject to tariffs beginning Tuesday, with the remaining C$125 billion to follow in 21 days.
