U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Monday a 30-day pause on tariffs imposed on Canada and Mexico. This suspension aims to facilitate the negotiation of a comprehensive economic deal with Canada.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated that the tariffs on Canada, introduced on Saturday, \"will be paused for a 30-day period\" to evaluate the potential for a final economic agreement. He expressed satisfaction with the initial outcome and emphasized the importance of cooperation.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau echoed Trump’s sentiments on X (formerly Twitter), noting that the tariffs would be paused while both nations work together. Trudeau highlighted Canada’s commitment to securing the northern border through a $1.3 billion border reinforcement plan. This plan includes the deployment of new helicopters, advanced technology, and nearly 10,000 frontline personnel to combat the flow of fentanyl.
Trudeau also announced additional measures such as appointing a fentanyl czar, designating cartels as terrorist organizations, ensuring 24/7 border surveillance, and launching a Canada-U.S. Joint Strike Force to tackle organized crime and money laundering. These initiatives are supported by a new intelligence directive backed by $200 million.
The original tariff order from Trump included a 25-percent levy on all imports from Canada and Mexico, as well as a 10-percent increase on imports from China. Canada responded with immediate retaliatory tariffs on $107 billion worth of American goods. Additionally, Trump confirmed a similar pause on tariffs with Mexico following discussions with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.
