Mexico Announces Retaliatory Tariffs Against U.S., President Sheinbaum Responds

In a bold response to recent U.S. trade measures, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on Saturday that Mexico will impose tariffs and other countermeasures against the United States. This move comes after U.S. President Donald Trump signed an order imposing tariffs on imports from Mexico, Canada, and China.

President Sheinbaum firmly rejected accusations from Washington alleging that her government has alliances with drug trafficking groups, labeling the claims as \"slander.\" In a lengthy post on X, she emphasized Mexico's desire for collaboration and dialogue rather than confrontation with its northern neighbor.

\"We categorically reject the White House's slander that the Mexican government has alliances with criminal organizations, as well as any intention of meddling in our territory,\" Sheinbaum wrote. \"Our focus remains on strengthening our nations through mutual respect and cooperation.\"

Since taking office in October, Sheinbaum has been proactive in combating drug trafficking, touting her administration's success in seizing 20 million doses of the deadly synthetic opioid fentanyl and detaining over 100,000 individuals linked to drug trafficking. She highlighted these efforts to underscore her government's commitment to combating organized crime.

Meanwhile, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that Canada will impose 25 percent tariffs on C$155 billion ($106.5 billion) worth of U.S. goods in retaliation for the U.S. tariffs. \"C$30 billion worth of goods will take effect on Tuesday, while C$125 billion will be implemented in 21 days,\" Trudeau stated during a news conference on Saturday.

The escalating trade tensions among North American countries signal a challenging period ahead for international trade relations. The impact of these tariffs is expected to reverberate across global markets, affecting industries and consumers alike.
