Trump Pauses Tariffs on Canada and Mexico for 30 Days Amid Negotiations

In a surprising turn of events, U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Monday a 30-day pause on the tariffs imposed on Canada and Mexico. This decision comes just two days after the tariffs were initially announced on Saturday, signaling a potential shift towards diplomatic negotiations.

\"The tariffs on Canada will be paused for a 30-day period to assess whether a final economic deal with Canada can be structured,\" Trump stated on the social media platform Truth Social. He emphasized Canada's commitment to securing the northern border and addressing the influx of deadly drugs like fentanyl into the United States.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau confirmed the development in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter. \"Just had a good call with President Trump,\" Trudeau wrote. \"Proposed tariffs will be paused for at least 30 days while we work together.\"

Trudeau outlined Canada's comprehensive plan to reinforce border security, which includes a $1.3 billion investment. The initiative aims to strengthen the border with new helicopters, advanced technology, and additional personnel. \"Nearly 10,000 frontline personnel are and will be working on protecting the border,\" he added.

The Canadian Prime Minister also announced new measures to combat organized crime and the fentanyl crisis. These measures include appointing a fentanyl czar, listing cartels as terrorist organizations, ensuring 24/7 surveillance at the border, and launching a Canada-U.S. Joint Strike Force. An additional $200 million will support a new intelligence directive on organized crime and fentanyl.

In a parallel development, Trump mentioned having a \"very friendly conversation\" with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. The two leaders agreed to an immediate one-month pause on the anticipated tariffs and to continue negotiations.

The original tariffs, signed into effect by Trump on Saturday, imposed an additional 25 percent tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico, along with a 10 percent tariff hike on imports from China. The move had drawn widespread opposition and prompted immediate retaliatory measures.

\"I am very pleased with this initial outcome,\" Trump remarked, expressing optimism about the forthcoming negotiations with both Canada and Mexico. The 30-day pause is expected to provide a window for all parties to reach mutually beneficial agreements.
