China has lodged a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO) following the United States' announcement of an additional 10 percent tariff on certain Chinese products, a spokesperson from the Ministry of Commerce reported on Tuesday.
The spokesperson stated that this move is intended to safeguard China's legitimate rights and interests in the face of escalating trade tensions. They emphasized that the U.S. imposition of additional tariffs on Chinese goods is a serious violation of WTO rules, characterizing it as an egregious act of unilateralism and trade protectionism.
\"The U.S. actions severely undermine the rules-based multilateral trading system, erode the foundation of China-U.S. economic and trade cooperation, and disrupt the stability of global industrial and supply chains,\" the spokesperson remarked.
The spokesperson further noted that the United States has repeatedly placed unilateralism above multilateralism, drawing strong condemnation from the majority of WTO members. \"China firmly opposes the U.S. actions and urges the U.S. side to immediately rectify its wrongdoings,\" they added.
As a steadfast supporter and significant contributor to the multilateral trading system, China expressed its readiness to collaborate with other WTO members to address the challenges posed by unilateralism and trade protectionism. The spokesperson emphasized China's commitment to safeguarding the orderly and stable development of international trade.
