Canada Imposes 25% Tariffs on US Goods in Retaliation to Trump’s Trade Order

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Saturday that Canada will impose 25 percent tariffs on C$155 billion (US$106.5 billion) worth of U.S. goods in response to recent U.S. tariffs. The tariffs will be implemented in two stages, with C$30 billion taking effect from Tuesday and the remaining C$125 billion in 21 days, Trudeau stated during a news conference.

Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order imposing 25 percent tariffs on all goods from Canada and Mexico starting on Tuesday, with the exception of Canadian energy products, which will be subjected to a 10 percent duty.

Trudeau warned that the coming weeks would be challenging for Canadians and cautioned that Trump's tariffs would also negatively impact Americans. Addressing the American public, he said, \"They will raise costs for you, including food at the grocery store, gas at the pump. They will impede your access to an affordable supply of vital goods.\"

The Canadian leader specified that the tariffs would target American beer, wine, and bourbon, as well as fruits and fruit juices, including orange juice from Trump's home state of Florida. Additional goods such as clothing, sports equipment, and household appliances would also be affected.

Furthermore, Canada is considering non-tariff measures that may relate to critical minerals, energy procurement, and other partnerships, Trudeau revealed.

Encouraging national solidarity, Trudeau urged Canadians to buy domestic products and consider vacationing within Canada rather than traveling to the U.S. \"We didn't ask for this but we will not back down,\" he affirmed.
