China Challenges U.S. Tariff Hikes with WTO Complaint

China has officially filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO) in response to the United States' announcement of an additional 10 percent tariff on certain Chinese products, a spokesperson from the Ministry of Commerce stated on Tuesday.

In a move to safeguard its legitimate rights and interests, China contends that the U.S. tariffs severely violate WTO rules and exemplify unilateralism and trade protectionism. The spokesperson emphasized that these actions by the U.S. undermine the rules-based multilateral trading system, erode the foundation of China-U.S. economic and trade cooperation, and disrupt the stability of global industrial and supply chains.

\"The United States has repeatedly placed unilateralism above multilateralism, drawing strong condemnation from the majority of WTO members,\" the spokesperson noted. \"China firmly opposes the U.S. actions and urges the U.S. side to immediately rectify its wrongdoings.\"

As a staunch supporter and significant contributor to the multilateral trading system, China expressed its readiness to collaborate with other WTO members to address the challenges posed by unilateralism and trade protectionism. The aim is to safeguard the orderly and stable development of international trade and reinforce the principles of the multilateral trading system.

The escalation in trade tensions comes amid ongoing disputes between the two largest economies over tariffs, technology transfers, and market access. China's move to seek resolution through the WTO underscores its commitment to multilateralism and adherence to international trade norms.
