Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on Saturday that Mexico will retaliate against the tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump with its own tariffs and other measures.
Sheinbaum also rejected accusations from Washington that her government has alliances with drug trafficking groups, calling the allegations \"slander.\" The statements come in the wake of President Trump's recent order imposing tariffs on imports from Mexico, Canada, and China.
In a lengthy post on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, Sheinbaum emphasized that her government seeks collaboration and dialogue with its northern neighbor, not confrontation.
\"We categorically reject the White House's slander that the Mexican government has alliances with criminal organizations, as well as any intention of meddling in our territory,\" Sheinbaum wrote.
Since taking office in October, Sheinbaum highlighted her administration's efforts in combating drug trafficking, including the seizure of 20 million doses of the deadly synthetic opioid fentanyl and the detention of over 10,000 individuals linked to drug activities.
Meanwhile, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Saturday that Canada would impose 25 percent tariffs on C$155 billion ($106.5 billion) worth of U.S. goods in response to U.S. tariffs. According to Trudeau, C$30 billion worth of goods would be affected starting Tuesday, with an additional C$125 billion implemented in 21 days.
