Mexico Announces Retaliation Against U.S. Tariffs, Denies Allegations

In a bold response to new U.S. tariffs, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on Saturday that Mexico will impose its own tariffs and take additional measures against the United States. The move comes after U.S. President Donald Trump signed an order imposing tariffs on imports from Mexico, Canada, and China.

Sheinbaum also vehemently rejected accusations from Washington that her government has alliances with drug trafficking groups, calling the claims \"slander.\"

\"We categorically reject the White House's slander that the Mexican government has alliances with criminal organizations, as well as any intention of meddling in our territory,\" Sheinbaum wrote in a lengthy post on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.

The Mexican president emphasized her government's desire for collaboration and dialogue with their northern neighbor, rather than confrontation. \"We do not seek conflict,\" she stated. \"Our focus is on fostering mutual respect and cooperation.\"

Since taking office in October, Sheinbaum has prioritized combating drug trafficking and has reported significant achievements, including the seizure of 20 million doses of the deadly synthetic opioid fentanyl and the detention of over 100,000 individuals linked to drug trafficking.

The escalating trade tensions have prompted reactions from other nations as well. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Saturday that Canada would impose 25 percent tariffs on C$155 billion ($106.5 billion) worth of U.S. goods in response to the U.S. tariffs. \"C$30 billion worth of goods will take effect on Tuesday, while C$125 billion will be implemented in 21 days,\" Trudeau stated during a news conference.
