Van Rompuy Calls for Enhanced China-EU Cooperation Ahead of Diplomatic Milestone

In a recent exclusive interview in Chengdu, capital of southwest China's Sichuan Province, Herman Van Rompuy, former Prime Minister of Belgium and the first President of the European Council, emphasized the importance of strengthening political trust and deepening economic ties between China and the European Union (EU) as they approach the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2025.

\"China and the EU have a significant role to play in shaping the global landscape,\" Van Rompuy stated. \"Our economic interdependence and shared challenges call for greater collaboration and mutual understanding.\"

The China-Europe Railway Express, which has completed over 100,000 trips since its inception, stands as a testament to the burgeoning trade relations between Asia and Europe. Van Rompuy highlighted the railway as a \"golden corridor\" that not only facilitates trade but also fosters cultural and people-to-people exchanges.

A devoted admirer of Chinese philosophy, Van Rompuy stressed the need for multilateralism, tolerance, and respect in international relations. \"In embracing these values, we can overcome external challenges and work towards common goals,\" he said.

Commenting on Chinese President Xi Jinping's three global initiatives, Van Rompuy noted that they \"provide direction for our efforts toward achieving critical goals.\" He expressed optimism that these initiatives could serve as a foundation for enhanced cooperation on issues such as climate change, global health, and sustainable development.

As China and the EU prepare to celebrate half a century of diplomatic ties, Van Rompuy urged both sides to seize the opportunity to strengthen their partnership. \"By building on our shared interests and addressing differences through dialogue, we can contribute positively to global stability and prosperity,\" he concluded.
