Mexico to Retaliate Against U.S. Tariffs, Denies Drug Cartel Allegations

Mexico will impose its own tariffs and measures in response to the United States' recent tariffs on Mexican goods, President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on Saturday.

In a statement, Sheinbaum rejected accusations from Washington that her government has alliances with drug trafficking organizations, labeling the claims as \"slander.\"

\"We categorically reject the White House's slander that the Mexican government has alliances with criminal organizations, as well as any intention of meddling in our territory,\" Sheinbaum wrote in a lengthy post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

The announcement follows U.S. President Donald Trump's signing of an order imposing tariffs on imports from Mexico, Canada, and China. The move has heightened tensions between the neighboring countries, with potential implications for international trade and economic relations.

Despite the escalating situation, Sheinbaum emphasized her government's desire for collaboration and dialogue with the United States. \"Our administration does not seek confrontation with our northern neighbor but rather aims to strengthen cooperation on mutual interests,\" she stated.

Sheinbaum highlighted her government's efforts since taking office in October, including the seizure of 20 million doses of fentanyl, a deadly synthetic opioid, and the detention of over 10,000 individuals linked to drug trafficking.

Canada Also Responds to U.S. Tariffs

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Saturday that Canada would impose 25 percent tariffs on C$155 billion (approximately $106.5 billion) worth of U.S. goods in retaliation. Trudeau specified that C$30 billion worth of goods would be subject to tariffs starting Tuesday, with an additional C$125 billion to be implemented within 21 days.

The unfolding trade disputes signal a challenging period ahead for North American relations, with economic and diplomatic impacts that could resonate globally.
