The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge witnessed an unprecedented surge in passenger traffic during the Spring Festival holiday, setting a new daily record since its inauguration in 2018. On Friday, the Zhuhai port of the bridge handled 156,000 inbound and outbound passenger trips, marking a significant milestone in its operational history.
Stretching 55 kilometers across the Pearl River Delta, the bridge seamlessly connects China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), Macao SAR, and the city of Zhuhai in Guangdong Province. Renowned as the world's longest bridge-and-tunnel sea crossing, it has become a vital artery for transportation and commerce in the region.
According to border inspection authorities in Zhuhai, from Tuesday to Friday—the first four days of the Spring Festival holiday—over 454,000 passenger trips and more than 69,000 vehicle trips were recorded through the bridge's Zhuhai port. These figures represent year-on-year increases of 22 percent and 32 percent, respectively, highlighting the growing popularity of the bridge among travelers and commuters.
Notably, daily passenger flows at the port surpassed 100,000 on 50 days in 2024, a tenfold increase from the same period in 2023. This remarkable growth underscores the bridge's significance in facilitating cross-border movement and fostering regional integration.
Furthermore, in 2024, the port recorded over 3 million trips by vehicles carrying number plates from Hong Kong or Macao, accounting for 55 percent of its total traffic. This surge reflects the increasing interconnectivity between the regions and the bridge's role in supporting economic development and cultural exchange.
