China Sets New Daily Box Office Record During Spring Festival

China has achieved a new milestone in its film industry during the Spring Festival, also known as Chinese New Year. On Wednesday, the nation's daily box office revenue soared to an unprecedented 1.805 billion yuan ($249 million), according to the China Film Administration (CFA).

A total of 35.15 million moviegoers visited cinemas on that day, surpassing previous records set during the 2021 Spring Festival. Both the box office earnings and the number of viewers reached all-time highs.

The Spring Festival holiday is traditionally one of China's most lucrative periods for the film industry. This year, the holiday runs from January 28 to February 4, extending one day longer than in previous years.

Leading the box office charts are six domestic films that premiered on Wednesday. These films span a variety of genres, including Chinese mythology, wuxia (martial arts and chivalry), comedy, fantasy, animation, and drama.

Huajin Securities noted that this diverse range of genres caters to the varied tastes of different audience groups. Many of these films are sequels in popular franchises, boasting strong reputations and large fan bases.

Since December last year, the CFA has encouraged relevant institutions to allocate approximately 600 million yuan in movie-going consumption subsidies. Analysts believe this initiative aims to unlock the full consumption potential of moviegoers.

Kaiyuan Securities predicts that total box office revenues will see a 6.7 percent year-on-year increase, reaching 8.54 billion yuan during the 2025 Spring Festival holiday.
