Beijing, China – In a significant move towards fostering global economic stability, member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) have jointly voiced their opposition to protectionist measures, unilateral sanctions, and trade restrictions that threaten the integrity of the multilateral trading system and impede sustainable development worldwide.
The collective stance was articulated in a joint communique released during the 23rd Meeting of the Council of Heads of Government of Member States of the SCO held on Wednesday. Delegation leaders emphasized that unilateral sanctions not only contravene international law but also inflict harm on the interests of nations and disrupt the established norms of international economic relations.
Highlighting the importance of regional cooperation, the SCO member states underscored the potential of harnessing the strengths of regional countries, international organizations, and multilateral mechanisms. They advocated for the creation of an expansive, open, mutually beneficial, and equitable cooperative space within the SCO region, all grounded in the principles of international law and mindful of national interests.
The delegations conveyed a unified belief in the necessity of collaborative efforts to combat trade protectionism, which they assert violates the rules and principles of the World Trade Organization (WTO). They stressed the imperative of reinforcing a non-discriminatory, open, fair, inclusive, and transparent multilateral trading system founded on WTO regulations.
The SCO's resolute position reflects a broader commitment to enhancing economic partnerships and promoting a stable and prosperous global economy. By championing these principles, the member states aim to facilitate smoother trade relations and contribute to sustainable economic growth across the region and beyond.
