Amid shifting global geopolitical dynamics and complex regional challenges, member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) are gearing up to reinforce their unity and central role on the international stage. The upcoming 44th and 45th ASEAN summits in Vientiane, Laos, from October 8 to 11, aim to bolster connectivity and resilience within the region, ensuring that the bloc continues to play a pivotal role in addressing regional and international issues.
More than 20 meetings will be held during the summits, attended by ASEAN heads of state and government, dialogue partners, external partner countries, and representatives from over 30 countries and entities. Under the theme \"ASEAN: Enhancing Connectivity and Resilience,\" leaders will focus on accelerating the building of the ASEAN community, deepening cooperative relationships with partners, and discussing issues of common concern.
ASEAN has demonstrated resilience and proactive adaptability, maintaining economic growth and playing a significant role in regional supply chains. In planning its Post-2025 Vision, the bloc is focusing on narrowing gaps in internal economic development, implementing the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and building a more inclusive and coordinated ASEAN community.
A key agenda item is the implementation of the roadmap for Timor-Leste's accession as a full member of ASEAN. Member states have agreed to assist Timor-Leste in meeting the criteria outlined in the roadmap to facilitate its integration into the bloc.
The emphasis on connectivity reflects both the challenges and opportunities faced by the region. Enhanced connectivity is seen as fundamental to building a united, strong, and resilient ASEAN community. The agenda supports narrowing development gaps among ASEAN countries and regions within them, ensuring that no country is left behind and all benefit from ASEAN's common development.
