Chinese Scientists Identify Immune Cells Worsening Chronic Sinus Infections

Chinese scientists have uncovered a surprising culprit behind chronic sinusitis and nasal polyps—a specific type of immune cell that, instead of defending the body, exacerbates inflammation and tissue damage.

In a study published in the prestigious journal Nature, researchers from Tsinghua University and Beijing Tongren Hospital identified Granzyme K (GZMK), a protein secreted by a specialized memory CD8+ T cell, as the key factor driving persistent sinus inflammation.

\"Think of white blood cells as the body's defense army, with T lymphocytes being the elite forces,\" explained Dr. Zhang Luo from Beijing Tongren Hospital. \"Within this group, memory CD8+ T cells act like specialized commandos.\"

Unlike traditional cells that release Granzyme B to combat pathogens, these particular memory CD8+ T cells secrete Granzyme K. \"Granzyme K bypasses the need for antibodies to activate the body's defense system,\" Dr. Zhang noted. \"However, instead of protecting the body, Granzyme K intensifies tissue damage and inflammation, worsening conditions like chronic sinusitis.\"

Chronic sinusitis and nasal polyps affect millions globally, leading to symptoms such as nasal congestion, loss of smell, and headaches. Current treatments often provide only temporary relief, with many patients experiencing frequent recurrences.

The discovery of GZMK's role opens new avenues for treatment. Experimental models showed that inhibiting GZMK significantly reduced inflammation. \"Targeting Granzyme K could revolutionize how we treat chronic sinusitis, nasal polyps, and related allergic diseases,\" said Professor Qi Hai of Tsinghua University. \"Medications designed to inhibit Granzyme K may help control inflammation and reduce recurrence.\"

This breakthrough offers hope for more effective therapies, potentially improving the quality of life for countless individuals suffering from chronic sinus conditions.
