More than a week has passed since a magnitude-6.8 earthquake shook Dingri County in southwest China's Xizang Autonomous Region on January 7. As resettlement and reconstruction efforts continue, stories of compassion and community are emerging from the affected areas.
In Cuo'ang Village, Quluo Town, the Xizang Forest Firefighting Special Operations Unit is doing more than just assisting with recovery efforts—they're bringing warmth and comfort to the villagers in a unique way. Our reporter, Zhao Chenchen, visited the frontline to witness the firefighters preparing lunch for the displaced residents.
Amidst the bustle of reconstruction, the aroma of home-cooked meals wafts through the village square. Firefighters, clad in their uniforms, set aside their tools to don aprons and chef hats. They chop vegetables, stir pots, and serve steaming dishes to grateful villagers.
“We're here not just to help rebuild structures but also to support the spirits of the people,” says one firefighter. “Cooking lunch is a small gesture, but it brings everyone together.”
Villagers, many of whom have lost their homes, gather to share the meal. Laughter and conversations fill the air, offering a brief respite from the challenges they face.
Resettlement efforts are progressing, with temporary shelters being set up and resources being distributed. The collaborative efforts between local authorities, volunteer groups, and units like the Xizang Forest Firefighting Special Operations Unit highlight the resilience and unity of the community.
As reconstruction continues, the shared meals symbolize hope and solidarity among the villagers and those aiding them.
The road to recovery may be long, but with acts of kindness and community support, Dingri County is steadily healing from the aftermath of the earthquake.
