The surveyed urban unemployment rate dropped to 5.1 percent in 2024, a decrease of 0.1 percentage points from the previous year. \"The employment situation remained generally stable,\" stated Lu Aihong, spokesperson for the ministry, during a recent press conference.
By the end of 2024, over 33.05 million individuals who had been lifted from poverty secured employment, showcasing China's commitment to sustainable development and poverty alleviation. The ministry emphasized the importance of job creation in maintaining social stability and economic growth.
Social security coverage also expanded significantly. Nearly 1.39 billion people were social security card holders by the end of last year, including 1.07 billion digital social security card users. The widespread adoption of both physical and digital social security cards reflects the country's advancements in digital infrastructure and public services.
In an effort to enhance workforce skills, over 12 million people obtained vocational skill-level certificates or professional qualification certificates in 2024. The ministry has strengthened the standardized management of vocational competence assessments to ensure a highly qualified labor force.
Looking ahead, the ministry announced plans for 2025 to implement a targeted employment support program focusing on key sectors, industries, urban-rural grassroots, and micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises. This initiative aims to establish a mechanism for collecting and releasing information on job positions related to major projects, thereby facilitating better employment opportunities.
The private pension system is also set for enhancement, with the ministry accelerating research and formulating policies to increase its appeal. Strengthening the private pension system is expected to contribute to the overall welfare of the aging population.
Human resource services have played a vital role in supporting employment. By the end of 2023, approximately 70,000 human resource service agencies were operating nationwide, employing over 1.06 million people. Throughout 2023, these agencies provided services to 300 million workers and nearly 56 million employers, with around 40 percent of the employers in the manufacturing sector, according to ministry official Zhang Wenmiao.
Youth employment remains a top priority. The ministry stated that it would introduce a youth job creation program this year, including measures to boost employment for college graduates. \"Throughout 2025, we will organize a series of activities to promote employment and entrepreneurship among young people,\" said Chen Yongjia, an official with the ministry.
