Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio Hold Telephone Conversation

On January 24, 2025, Wang Yi, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Chinese Foreign Minister, held a telephone conversation with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The discussion focused on the future of China-U.S. relations and ways to enhance cooperation between the two nations.

Wang Yi noted that President Xi Jinping recently had an important phone call with President Donald Trump, during which they reached a series of consensuses. He emphasized that China-U.S. relations have entered a new and significant phase, guided by the direction set by the two leaders. Wang Yi expressed that both countries' teams should implement the consensus reached, maintain communication, manage differences, and expand cooperation based on mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation.

He highlighted that China's leadership under the Communist Party of China is the choice of the Chinese people and that China's development aims to improve the lives of its people and contribute positively to the world. \"China has no intention of overtaking or replacing anyone but must defend its legitimate right to development,\" Wang Yi stated.

The conversation also touched upon the Taiwan issue. Wang Yi reiterated China's principled position and urged the United States to handle the matter prudently. He stressed that Taiwan has been part of China since ancient times and that China will never allow Taiwan to be separated from the rest of the country. He reminded that in the three China-U.S. joint communiqués, the United States has committed to the one-China policy and should uphold its promises.

On his part, Secretary Rubio acknowledged that the United States and China are two great nations, and their relationship is the most important bilateral relationship in the 21st century. He expressed the United States' readiness to communicate with China in a frank manner, properly handle differences, and manage bilateral relations maturely and prudently. Rubio emphasized the importance of jointly addressing global challenges and maintaining world peace and stability.

\"The United States does not support 'Taiwan independence' and hopes that the Taiwan issue will be resolved peacefully in a way acceptable to both sides of the Taiwan Strait,\" Rubio said.

Wang Yi concluded by stating that major countries should act responsibly, safeguard world peace, and assist all countries in achieving common development. He expressed his hope that Rubio would play a constructive role in fostering positive relations between the Chinese and American people and contributing to global peace and stability.
