China has honored the three astronauts of the Shenzhou-18 mission with prestigious awards for their exceptional contributions to the nation's space endeavors. On Thursday, Ye Guangfu, Li Cong, and Li Guangsu received medals recognizing their achievements during the historic mission.
Ye Guangfu was bestowed with a second-class aerospace achievement medal, acknowledging his leadership and experience as the mission's commander. Having previously received the honorary title of \"Heroic Astronaut\" in 2022, Ye's latest accolade cements his status as one of China's most accomplished astronauts.
First-time astronauts Li Cong and Li Guangsu were each awarded third-class aerospace achievement medals and the honorary title of \"Heroic Astronaut.\" Li Cong, the youngest member of the crew, excelled in all assigned tasks during the mission. Li Guangsu made significant contributions by successfully installing the first space debris protection device on the space station during his inaugural spacewalk.
The awards were conferred by the Communist Party of China Central Committee, the State Council, and the Central Military Commission, reflecting the country's recognition of the astronauts' dedication and the mission's success.
Launched on April 25, 2024, the Shenzhou-18 mission marked Ye Guangfu's second journey to China's space station. Over approximately six months, the crew conducted two extravehicular activities and completed nearly 100 space science experiments and in-orbit application payload tests. Ye's combined time in space now exceeds one year, making him China's first astronaut to achieve this milestone, following his six-month stay during the Shenzhou-13 mission.
After a record-breaking 192 days in orbit, the Shenzhou-18 crew returned to Earth on November 4, 2024. Their mission not only advanced China's space exploration ambitions but also set new records for duration and scientific achievements.
Their remarkable journey and the honors bestowed upon them underscore China's growing capabilities in space exploration and its commitment to advancing scientific knowledge.
