A Tradition Deeply Rooted in Russian Culture

In Moscow alone, over 80 winter swimming clubs cater to thousands who seek the thrill and benefits of this icy plunge. Among these clubs, the Serebryany Bor, or Silver Forest Walrus Club, stands out with its rich history spanning 63 years. As one of the oldest winter swimming clubs in Russia, it has become a beacon for both seasoned swimmers and curious newcomers.

We had the opportunity to speak with Andrey Zamyslov, the chairman of the Silver Forest Walrus Club and president of the Winter Swimming Federation of Moscow. Andrey shared insights into the world of winter swimming, emphasizing the importance of proper preparation and technique.

Building Cold Resistance and Flexibility

\"Winter swimming is not just about jumping into cold water; it's a journey of building your body and mind to withstand and embrace the cold,\" says Andrey. He recommends gradual exposure to lower temperatures, starting with cool showers and progressing to short dips in cold water. Consistency is key to developing cold resistance safely.

Flexibility and physical fitness also play crucial roles. \"Maintaining flexibility helps your body adapt quickly to the cold environment,\" Andrey explains. Regular stretching and exercises can enhance circulation and reduce the risk of injury during winter swims.
