2024 Sees Nearly Half of US Companies in China Profitable: AmCham Report

Despite global geopolitical uncertainties and regulatory challenges, nearly half of US companies operating in China reported profitability in 2024, according to the 27th annual Business Climate Survey Report released by the American Chamber of Commerce in China on Thursday.

The report revealed that 46 percent of member companies were profitable or very profitable, while 36 percent broke even, and 18 percent operated at a loss over the past year. This emphasizes the enduring significance of the Chinese market for US businesses.

Furthermore, 87 percent of respondents acknowledged that positive bilateral relations between the United States and China are crucial to their operations in the Chinese mainland, marking a 5 percentage point increase compared to 2023.

Alvin Liu, Chair of the American Chamber of Commerce in China, highlighted the importance of constructive relations, stating, \"US-China relations remain the most consequential bilateral dynamic in the world today, and understanding the perspectives of our members has never been more important. A stable and constructive relationship, grounded in economic and trade ties, is critical not only for the prosperity of our two nations but also for global economic stability.\"

The survey also indicated that China remains a priority market for US companies, with 48 percent of respondents ranking it as a top-three global investment destination.

Despite the challenges, the report underscores the resilience of US businesses in China and the mutual benefits of sustained economic engagement between the two nations.
