China Leads Global Nuclear Power Capacity with 125 GW Milestone

China has become the world's largest nuclear power producer, achieving a historic 125 gigawatts (GW) of installed capacity as of April 2026, according to a China Nuclear Energy Development Report 2026 released by the China Nuclear Energy Association. This milestone solidifies the nation's role as a driving force in clean energy innovation.

With 60 operational nuclear reactors and 36 more under construction – representing over half of all global nuclear projects – China's expansion continues at an unprecedented pace. Seven new units are scheduled for completion by year's end, while 16 additional projects recently gained government approval.

"This growth demonstrates our commitment to low-carbon development and energy security," stated a CNEA spokesperson. The report highlights how nuclear energy supports China's climate goals while meeting rising electricity demands from urban development and high-tech industries.

Analysts note the expansion creates opportunities for international technology partnerships and positions Chinese firms as key players in next-generation reactor designs. The achievement comes as multiple Asian countries accelerate their own nuclear programs to transition from fossil fuels.
