Firefighters Cook Lunch for Quake-Affected Villagers in Xizang’s Dingri County

More than a week has passed since a magnitude-6.8 earthquake struck Dingri County in southwest China's Xizang Autonomous Region on January 7. Amid ongoing resettlement and reconstruction efforts, acts of kindness and solidarity are emerging, bringing hope to the affected communities.

In the small village of Cuo'ang, nestled within Quluo Town, the Xizang Forest Firefighting Special Operations Unit is going beyond their call of duty. These firefighters, known for their bravery in battling blazes, have taken on a new role: chefs for the villagers displaced by the quake.

Our reporter, Zhao Chenchen, visited Cuo'ang Village to witness firsthand the heartwarming scene. As the winter sun cast a gentle glow, the firefighters busied themselves over steaming pots and crackling fires, preparing a hearty lunch for the villagers. The aroma of freshly cooked food mingled with the crisp mountain air, offering a semblance of normalcy amidst the upheaval.

\"We are here not just to provide emergency services but to support the community in any way we can,\" said Wang Jian, a member of the firefighting unit. \"Cooking meals is a small gesture, but it brings us closer together.\"

The villagers, many of whom lost their homes in the earthquake, gathered around to share the meal. Laughter and conversations filled the air as they expressed gratitude for the firefighters' efforts. For many, this communal meal was a respite from the challenges they have faced since the disaster.

\"Their kindness warms our hearts,\" said Dolma, a resident of Cuo'ang Village. \"In these difficult times, it's the support of people like them that gives us strength.\"

The firefighters' initiative is part of a broader effort to foster community resilience. While reconstruction work progresses, such acts of solidarity are vital in restoring hope and unity among the affected populations.

As the day drew to a close, the firefighters and villagers parted ways with renewed spirits. The simple act of sharing a meal had bridged gaps and reinforced the bonds of community, illustrating the profound impact of compassion in times of adversity.

Resettlement efforts in Dingri County continue, with local authorities coordinating with various organizations to ensure that those affected receive the necessary aid and support. The dedication of the Xizang Forest Firefighting Special Operations Unit serves as a testament to the strength and resilience of the human spirit in facing natural disasters.
