More than a week has passed since a magnitude-6.8 earthquake struck Dingri County in southwest China's Xizang Autonomous Region on January 7. As resettlement and reconstruction efforts continue, stories of solidarity and compassion are emerging from the quake-affected areas.
In Cuo'ang Village, Quluo Town, Dingri County, firefighters from the Xizang Forest Firefighting Special Operations Unit are going beyond their call of duty. Our reporter, Zhao Chenchen, joined them on the frontline as they prepared lunch for the villagers displaced by the earthquake.
“We are here not only to assist in rescue operations but also to support the daily needs of the villagers,” said Wang Ming, a team leader of the firefighting unit. “Cooking meals is one way we can bring a sense of normalcy and comfort during this difficult time.”
The firefighters set up a makeshift kitchen in the village center, where they cooked hearty meals using locally sourced ingredients. The aroma of freshly cooked food brought smiles to the faces of the villagers, many of whom have been living in temporary shelters since the quake.
“It’s heartwarming to see the firefighters caring for us like family,” said Tsering Dorje, a resident of Cuo’ang Village. “Their support gives us strength to rebuild our homes and our lives.”
As reconstruction efforts progress, the collaborative spirit between rescuers and residents exemplifies the resilience of the community. Stories like these highlight the human connections that shine brightest in times of adversity.
