Firefighters Cook for Quake-Affected Villagers in Xizang’s Dingri County

Over a week has passed since a magnitude-6.8 earthquake struck Dingri County in southwest China’s Xizang Autonomous Region on January 7. As resettlement and reconstruction efforts continue, signs of hope and resilience are emerging in the quake-affected communities.

In the quiet village of Cuo’ang, nestled in Quluo Town, the scent of a warm meal fills the air. Members of the Xizang Forest Firefighting Special Operations Unit have taken on a new role beyond their duties—they are cooks and companions to the villagers who have endured the hardship of the disaster.

“We wanted to do something that would not only provide physical nourishment but also lift the spirits of the people here,” said one of the firefighters. Together with the residents, they prepare a hearty lunch, combining supplies brought in with local ingredients salvaged from the rubble.

The communal meal is more than just sustenance; it’s a moment of solidarity. Children laugh as they help stir pots, and elders share stories of the village’s history and hopes for the future. The firefighters, many of whom are far from their own homes, find connection in these shared experiences.

“Their support gives us strength,” said a local villager. “It’s not just about rebuilding our homes, but also about rebuilding our lives and community.”

The efforts in Cuo’ang Village reflect a broader commitment to recovery throughout Xizang. As aid continues to arrive, the collaboration between rescue workers and residents underscores the resilience and unity of the people.

Reporter Zhao Chenchen, on the ground in Dingri County, witnesses firsthand the determination and compassion that define the region’s response to adversity. “Every act of kindness adds up,” Zhao notes. “From cooking meals to clearing debris, it’s a collective effort that makes a real difference.”
