UCCA Clay Opens, Reimagining Yixing’s Ceramic Heritage

On October 19, the new UCCA Clay museum opened its doors in Yixing, renowned as China’s “City of Ceramics.” The inaugural exhibition, “The Ways of Clay,” celebrates the city’s 7,000-year-old ceramic tradition while embracing contemporary art.

Designed by the esteemed architect Kengo Kuma, UCCA Clay is a harmonious blend of history and modernity. Its terracotta façade, inspired by an ancient dragon kiln, pays homage to Yixing’s rich heritage. The design creates a bold and innovative space where tradition meets innovation, inviting visitors to explore the evolving world of ceramic artistry.

As the fourth museum under the UCCA brand in China, UCCA Clay aims to connect audiences from Yixing, Jiangsu Province, and beyond to the dynamic realm of ceramic art. The institution serves as a cultural bridge, fostering appreciation for the craft’s historical significance and its contemporary interpretations.

“Our goal is to honor Yixing’s profound legacy while showcasing the limitless possibilities of clay as an artistic medium,” said a representative from UCCA Clay. “We hope to inspire both the local community and international visitors through interactive exhibits and educational programs.”

The opening of UCCA Clay not only enriches Yixing’s cultural landscape but also offers new opportunities for artists, scholars, and enthusiasts worldwide. By reimagining the city’s ceramic heritage, the museum stands as a testament to the enduring impact of art in bridging cultures and generations.

Visitors can experience “The Ways of Clay” exhibition and immerse themselves in a journey that spans millennia, highlighting the innovations that continue to shape the art of ceramics today.
