Biden Warns of ‘Dangerous Oligarchy’ in Farewell Address Ahead of Trump’s Return

In a prime-time farewell address from the Oval Office on Wednesday, U.S. President Joe Biden urged Americans to “stand guard” against a “dangerous” oligarchy forming under incoming President Donald Trump.

At 82, Biden delivered his closing remarks at the end of his single term, warning of an ultra-wealthy “tech industrial complex” that he believes could gain unchecked power over the American people and potentially affect global dynamics.

“Today, an oligarchy is taking shape in America of extreme wealth, power, and influence that literally threatens our entire democracy,” Biden said. “That’s a dangerous concentration of power in the hands of a very few ultra-wealthy people.”

Biden specifically called out social media giants, noting that X owner and the world’s richest man, Elon Musk, is set to play a key role in Trump’s incoming administration. He also mentioned Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s alignment with the Republican leader.

“Americans are being buried under an avalanche of misinformation and disinformation, enabling the abuse of power,” Biden stated.

As he prepares to hand over the presidency to Trump on January 20, Biden reflected on his tenure and the challenges ahead. “Now it’s your turn to stand guard,” he told the nation.

Biden’s departure marks a significant shift in U.S. politics that could have far-reaching implications for global affairs, including Asia’s political and economic landscape.

Throughout his final months in office, Biden sought to solidify his legacy before being succeeded by his bitter political rival, whom he defeated in the 2020 election—a result Trump has continued to dispute.

In a significant development earlier Wednesday, Israel and Hamas agreed to a ceasefire and hostage release deal. Biden noted that his administration had cooperated with Trump’s team to reach the accord, signaling a potential shift in Middle East dynamics that could influence broader geopolitical relations.

The White House also released a comprehensive dossier highlighting Biden’s achievements, ranging from economic recovery to healthcare reforms and climate change initiatives, many of which have international implications.

In a heartfelt letter previewing his speech, Biden wrote, “I have given my heart and my soul to our nation,” adding that it had been the “privilege of my life to serve this nation for over 50 years.”
