Panama Celebrates 25th Anniversary of Canal’s Handover

Panama on Tuesday celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Panama Canal’s handover, marking a significant milestone since gaining full control of the vital waterway after nearly a century of U.S. administration.

The United States inaugurated the canal in 1914 and operated it until December 31, 1999. The Torrijos-Carter Treaties, signed on September 7, 1977, by Panama’s General Omar Torrijos and U.S. President Jimmy Carter, paved the way for the transfer of control, ending 85 years of the Panama Canal Zone as a U.S. territory.

“These 25 years of Panamanian administration have demonstrated our commitment to ensuring the safe and continuous operation of the canal for the world,” said Panamanian President Laurentino Cortizo during a ceremony at the Panama Canal Administration Building.

“This canal is and will continue to be the canal of Panamanians, for Panamanians, serving the world but above all serving our nation,” Cortizo declared to an audience of officials and citizens.

The Panama Canal Administrator, Ricaurte Vásquez Morales, highlighted the achievements made under Panamanian management, including the canal’s expansion and the construction of the Third Set of Locks, which began operating in 2016. “Our efforts have enhanced global trade and solidified Panama’s position as a key player in international maritime commerce,” he noted.

During the ceremony, Miguel Guerra, one of the first Panamanians to join the canal’s workforce following the handover, received the Order of Vasco Núñez de Balboa, honoring his dedication and service.

The historic handover on December 31, 1999, was officiated under then-President Mireya Moscoso, symbolizing Panama’s sovereignty over the crucial maritime passage connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

As Panama reflects on two and a half decades of stewardship, the nation looks forward to continuing its role in facilitating global trade while prioritizing national development and prosperity.
