The Chinese Ambassador to Vanuatu, Li Minggang, extended heartfelt condolences on Wednesday to the families of Chinese nationals who lost their lives in the recent devastating earthquakes that struck the Pacific island nation.
During his visit, Ambassador Li expressed deep sympathy to the bereaved families, assuring them of the embassy’s full support during this difficult time. “We stand with you in grief and will provide all necessary assistance to help you rebuild,” he stated. He also conveyed that the embassy has urged the Vanuatu government and relevant authorities to take prompt and effective measures for post-disaster recovery.
Vanuatu was rocked by a 7.3-magnitude earthquake on December 17, which resulted in at least 14 fatalities and left over 200 people injured. The disaster caused significant damage to infrastructure, disrupting the lives of thousands. Just days later, on December 22, a subsequent 6.1-magnitude quake struck, exacerbating the already dire situation and hampering relief efforts.
In response to the crisis, China dispatched a team of four technical specialists to Vanuatu to assist in the recovery efforts. According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, the team, which arrived on Monday, will conduct scientific examinations of building structures in the severely affected areas. Their mission includes performing safety assessments and investigating potential secondary disasters to prevent further harm.
The Chinese government’s swift action underscores the strong ties between China and Vanuatu and highlights its commitment to supporting its citizens abroad. The technical team’s expertise is expected to significantly aid in the rehabilitation of critical infrastructure and enhance the resilience of local communities against future disasters.
Ambassador Li’s engagement with the victims’ families reflects a broader effort to provide not only material assistance but also emotional support. The embassy has set up a dedicated hotline and counseling services to address the needs of those affected by the tragedy.
The recent earthquakes have drawn international attention to Vanuatu’s vulnerability to natural disasters. As relief and reconstruction efforts continue, collaboration between the Vanuatu government, international partners, and local communities remains essential to rebuilding and strengthening the nation’s infrastructure and emergency response capabilities.
