Chinese Ambassador Visits Earthquake Victims’ Families in Vanuatu

On Wednesday, Chinese Ambassador to Vanuatu, Li Minggang, visited the families of Chinese nationals who tragically lost their lives in the recent devastating earthquake that struck the Pacific island nation.

Ambassador Li expressed his deepest condolences to the bereaved families, offering heartfelt sympathy and reassurance that the Chinese embassy will provide all necessary assistance during this difficult time. He emphasized the embassy’s commitment to supporting those affected and urged the Vanuatu government to take swift and effective measures in the aftermath of the disaster.

“We stand with you in this moment of grief,” Li stated. “The embassy is here to support you, and we are working closely with the Vanuatu authorities to ensure that appropriate measures are taken to assist all those impacted.”

Vanuatu experienced a powerful 7.3-magnitude earthquake on December 17, resulting in at least 14 fatalities and injuring over 200 people. The disaster caused significant damage to infrastructure and left many communities devastated. A subsequent 6.1-magnitude quake struck on December 22, exacerbating the situation and hampering relief efforts.

In response to the crisis, China dispatched a team of four technical specialists to Vanuatu to assist in recovery efforts. According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, the team will conduct scientific examinations of building structures in severely affected areas, perform safety assessments, and investigate potential secondary disasters.

The collaborative efforts between China and Vanuatu highlight the importance of international cooperation in times of natural disasters. As recovery operations continue, the focus remains on providing relief to those affected and rebuilding the communities impacted by the earthquakes.
