Aviation experts are delving into the tragic plane crash that occurred on Sunday in South Korea, aiming to uncover the factors that led to the catastrophe which claimed the lives of 179 out of the 181 people on board.
Jeju Air flight 7C2216, en route from Bangkok to Muan International Airport, attempted to land shortly after 9 a.m. During its scheduled approach, the pilots reported to air traffic control that the aircraft had suffered a bird strike. Shortly after, they issued a Mayday warning, indicating an emergency situation and their intention to abort the landing and attempt a go-around.
However, moments later, the aircraft made a belly landing approximately 1,200 meters along the 2,800-meter runway at Muan International Airport. The plane skidded off the runway, crashing into an embankment at the end of the landing strip. Upon impact, the aircraft erupted into flames, resulting in a devastating loss of life. Of the 181 people on board—175 passengers and six crew members—only two crew members survived the crash.
Investigators are examining several potential causes, including the reported bird strike, a possible landing gear malfunction, the presence of a concrete structure near the runway, and pilot error. Aviation analyst Park Joon-ho commented, “Multiple factors could have contributed to this tragic event. It’s crucial to thoroughly investigate each possibility to prevent future incidents.”
The crash has sent shockwaves through the region, prompting calls for enhanced safety measures and rigorous inspections of airport infrastructure. Families of the victims are demanding answers as authorities work tirelessly to piece together the events leading up to the disaster.
Jeju Air released a statement expressing deep condolences to the families affected and assured full cooperation with the investigation. The Republic of Korea’s aviation authorities have pledged to conduct a comprehensive inquiry into the incident.
As the investigation continues, the nation mourns the loss of so many lives and looks to find closure through understanding the causes of this heartbreaking accident.
