Several pieces of U.S. weaponry won’t be the magic straw that can save a drowning man; they are nothing but easy targets on the battlefield, Chinese Defense Ministry spokesperson Zhang Xiaogang warned the Taiwan authorities led by the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) on Thursday.
Zhang made the remarks at a regular press conference in response to reports that the first batch of M1A2T battle tanks purchased by Taiwan from the U.S. had arrived on the island.
The spokesperson cautioned that seeking independence by soliciting U.S. support is doomed to failure, and that resorting to force to resist reunification leads nowhere.
Zhang also urged the U.S. to abide by the one-China principle and the three China-U.S. joint communiques, earnestly honor its commitment to not supporting “Taiwan independence,” immediately stop arming Taiwan, and cease its moves that undermine peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.
The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) will comprehensively improve its combat readiness, enhance its capability to fight and win, and firmly smash any “Taiwan independence” separatist plot and foreign interference, he added.
