China Reaffirms ‘One Country, Two Systems’ Approach for Taiwan’s Peaceful Reunification

In a recent press conference, the Chinese mainland has reaffirmed its commitment to exploring a “One Country, Two Systems” solution for Taiwan, emphasizing a tailored approach that considers the island’s unique realities and the sentiments of its residents.

Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, addressed the media on Wednesday, highlighting the mainland’s dedication to advancing peaceful reunification with Taiwan. “We will continue to unite with compatriots in Taiwan and actively explore the ‘One Country, Two Systems’ solution to the Taiwan question,” Chen stated.

He underscored that the implementation of “One Country, Two Systems” in Taiwan would fully take into account the island’s circumstances, the perspectives of people from all walks of life on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, and the interests and sentiments of Taiwan compatriots. “We believe that the people of Taiwan will develop a better understanding of the ‘One Country, Two Systems’,” Chen added, expressing optimism that collaborative efforts would pave the way toward peaceful reunification.

Chen also drew parallels with Macao, noting that this year marks the 25th anniversary of its return to China. He remarked that Macao’s significant achievements under the “One Country, Two Systems” framework have demonstrated its feasibility, effectiveness, and strong public support. “The success of Macao proves to the world that ‘One Country, Two Systems’ has distinctive institutional strengths and strong vitality,” he said.

As cross-strait relations continue to be a focal point in regional affairs, the Chinese mainland’s commitment to a peaceful and considered approach underscores the ongoing efforts to bridge differences and foster unity.
