China is set to face Brazil in their opening match at the United Cup in Perth, Australia, on Friday. Leading the men’s singles team, Zhang Zhizhen, currently ranked 45th in the world, is gearing up to showcase his skills on the international stage.
Zhang arrived in Perth earlier this week and expressed his enthusiasm on social media. He will compete against Brazil’s Thiago Monteiro in the men’s singles on Friday and is scheduled to face Germany’s Alexander Zverev next Monday.
In the women’s singles, Gao Xinyu will represent China after being added to the roster. She replaces Zheng Qinwen, who decided to withdraw from the tournament to focus on the upcoming Australian Open. Gao may also team up with Zhang in mixed doubles if required.
The United Cup features 18 teams competing in six groups across Sydney and Perth. The six group leaders and the two best-performing runners-up will advance to the elimination phase, intensifying the competition for the coveted title.
Last January, Germany clinched the championship by defeating Poland 2-1, setting high stakes for this year’s participating teams.
