Xi Jinping Praises Macao’s ‘Extraordinary’ Achievements Over Past Five Years

On the eve of the 25th anniversary of Macao’s return to China, President Xi Jinping praised the region’s “extraordinary” achievements over the past five years. Speaking at a welcome dinner hosted by the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) government on Thursday, Xi commended the resilience and progress of Macao amid global challenges.

“Against the backdrop of global transformations unseen in a century and the unprecedented pandemic, the fifth-term SAR government has rallied the people of all sectors to rise to the challenge,” Xi stated. “Their results-oriented efforts have ensured steady economic recovery and progress in all undertakings.”

Xi highlighted the significant strides Macao has made in diversifying its economy and improving the well-being of its residents. He noted that the region’s political and social foundation, rooted in love for the Chinese nation and love for Macao, has become stronger, enhancing its international influence and visibility.

The President attributed these achievements to the full and faithful implementation of the “One Country, Two Systems” policy, the vigorous support of the central government and the mainland, and the hard work of the people of Macao. “These remarkable accomplishments are the result of united efforts under the leadership of the Macao SAR government,” he added.

Looking forward, Xi urged Macao to proactively align with national development strategies, such as the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area initiative, and to seek a greater role on the international stage. He emphasized the importance of upholding the values of love for the Chinese nation and love for Macao while embracing openness and inclusiveness.

“Macao needs to demonstrate stronger resolve and greater courage in reform and innovation,” Xi said. “By leveraging the institutional strengths of ‘One Country, Two Systems,’ the region can break new ground in its development.”

Outgoing Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng echoed Xi’s sentiments, expressing confidence that Macao would contribute more to China’s growth and the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. He conveyed his firm belief that the incoming Chief Executive, Sam Hou Fai, would lead the new government to “write a new chapter in the practice of ‘One Country, Two Systems’ with Macao characteristics.”
