Death Toll from Vanuatu Earthquake Rises to 14 After Powerful Aftershocks

Port Vila, Vanuatu — At least 14 people have been killed and hundreds more injured after a major earthquake struck Vanuatu on Tuesday, the Red Cross reported early Wednesday local time, citing government sources.

The 7.3-magnitude earthquake hit Vanuatu’s capital city of Port Vila, causing widespread damage to infrastructure and homes. The initial death toll was previously reported at seven by local media but has since doubled as rescue efforts continue.

Survivors described scenes of chaos as buildings shook violently, sending people fleeing into the streets. “Everything started to tremble; we ran out immediately,” said a resident of Port Vila. “There was a loud rumbling sound, and the ground wouldn’t stop moving.”

Several aftershocks have rattled the region, including one measuring a magnitude of 5.5 in the early hours of Wednesday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Authorities have warned residents to remain vigilant as aftershocks may continue in the coming days.

Emergency services and international aid organizations are mobilizing to assist with rescue and relief efforts. The Red Cross has set up shelters for those displaced by the quake and is providing medical assistance to the injured.

Vanuatu, located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, is prone to frequent seismic activity. The government is urging citizens to follow safety protocols and stay updated through official channels.

The full extent of the damage is still being assessed, and officials expect the number of casualties to rise as rescue teams reach more affected areas.
