Macao’s Elderly Care Model Enriches Lives in Hengqin

“An old person in a home is like a treasure of the family.” This timeless saying resonates deeply in Hengqin, a district in China’s Greater Bay Area, thanks to the innovative efforts of the General Union of Neighborhood Associations of Macao.

In 2019, the association established a presence in Hengqin, bringing “Macao-style” elderly care services to the mainland. At the forefront of this initiative is Lu Fengxuan, a native of Macao whose dedication and experience have been instrumental in transforming the lives of seniors in Hengqin.

With a passion for community and a wealth of knowledge in elderly care, Lu has enabled Hengqin’s seniors to enjoy a joyful and fulfilling life in their later years. Under her guidance, the elderly residents are not just recipients of care but active participants in a vibrant community. They are encouraged to share their skills, engage in activities, and contribute ideas for community development.

“I believe that every senior has something valuable to offer,” Lu shared. “By fostering a sense of belonging and purpose, we can enhance their quality of life and strengthen the community as a whole.”

This collaborative approach has positioned Hengqin as a pioneer in implementing “Macao-style” elderly care services within China’s Greater Bay Area. The integration of these services bridges cultural experiences between Macao and the mainland, illustrating a successful model of cross-regional cooperation.

The impact of this initiative extends beyond the seniors themselves. Families in Hengqin have observed positive changes in their elderly relatives, noting increased happiness and engagement. The community at large benefits from the wisdom and contributions of its senior members, truly embracing the notion that elders are treasures of the family.

As China’s Greater Bay Area continues to develop, the application of Macao’s elderly care experience in Hengqin serves as an inspiring example of how regional collaboration can enrich lives and strengthen communities.
