Beijing, October 25, 2023 — China’s top diplomat, Wang Yi, has called for joint efforts to promote stable and lasting relations between China and Japan, emphasizing the importance of cooperation for regional and international peace and stability.
In a video speech delivered on Wednesday at the 20th Beijing-Tokyo Forum, Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs, highlighted the long-standing historical ties between the two nations.
“China and Japan share more than 2,000 years of exchanges, and it has been over 50 years since the normalization of our diplomatic relations,” Wang said. “A China-Japan relationship headed in the right direction holds significant positive meaning not only for our countries and peoples but also for the peace and development of the region and the world.”
Wang urged both sides to adhere to the important consensus reached by their leaders, maintain the original aspirations of their relationship, and pursue the correct path toward seeking common ground and coordinated actions. “Our aim should be to promote stable and lasting bilateral relations,” he stated.
He called on both countries to properly understand the correct positioning of their bilateral relations. “China has always regarded Japan as an important cooperation partner and hopes that Japan can view China’s development objectively and rationally,” Wang noted. “We hope Japan will work with China to advance our strategic, mutually beneficial relations and implement the important consensus that our two countries should be cooperative partners and not pose a threat to each other.”
The forum, a platform for dialogue between China and Japan, provided an opportunity for both sides to discuss ways to strengthen cooperation and address common challenges. Wang’s remarks underscore China’s commitment to fostering a stable and constructive relationship with Japan amidst a complex international landscape.
