Xi Jinping Calls for Strategic Vision in China-Germany Relations at G20 Summit

On the sidelines of the 19th G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Chinese President Xi Jinping met with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Tuesday, emphasizing the need for China and Germany to approach their bilateral relations from a long-term and strategic perspective.

“As the second- and third-largest economies in the world, China and Germany hold significant influence,” Xi stated. “We should strengthen our comprehensive strategic partnership, viewing and developing our ties with a long-term vision.”

Reflecting on Scholz’s visit to China in April, Xi noted that the two sides had engaged in candid, in-depth, and fruitful discussions. In the months since, cooperation between China and Germany has achieved notable results in areas such as green development, sustainable transportation, and agricultural developments in Africa. “Our bilateral relations continue to show new strength and vitality,” Xi remarked.

Xi highlighted the deep economic interdependence between the two nations, emphasizing that their cooperation offers opportunities for shared development and a collaborative future. “China regards Germany as an important partner in advancing Chinese modernization and will continue to provide German companies with broad market opportunities,” he assured.

Looking ahead, Xi encouraged both countries to focus on digitalization, intelligent technologies, and low-carbon development to upgrade and enhance their cooperation. He also suggested joint exploration of third-party markets to achieve mutual benefits and win-win results.

“China views Europe as a significant pole in a multipolar world,” Xi said, expressing China’s commitment to collaborating with Europe to address global challenges and promote the stable and healthy development of relations between China and Europe.

Addressing concerns over the European Union’s decision to impose tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, Xi reiterated China’s commitment to resolving disputes through dialogue and consultation. He expressed hope that Germany would continue to play a key role in this process, fostering a cooperative spirit between China and Europe.
