Macao’s Chief Executive Election Hailed as ‘Pioneering’ by Liaison Office

The Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) has lauded the recent chief executive election as “pioneering and emblematic,” marking a significant milestone in the region’s governance.

On Sunday, the office extended its congratulations to Sam Hou Fai, the newly elected chief executive designate of the Macao SAR. An official from the office highlighted that this election, the first since amendments to the Chief Executive Election Law came into effect earlier this year, effectively implemented the principle of “patriots administering Macao.”

Describing the election process as “open, fair, and just,” the official praised the efficient organization by the Electoral Affairs Commission for the Chief Executive Election. The lawful campaigning by the candidate, along with active participation from electoral commission members, various sectors of Macao’s society, and local residents, were also commended.

The smooth conduct of the election represents another success in the full and accurate implementation of the “One Country, Two Systems” principle, under which the people of Macao administer the region with a high degree of autonomy. The official noted that the election has effectively safeguarded the constitutional order in the Macao SAR, as stipulated in China’s Constitution and the Basic Law of the Macao SAR.

Expressing confidence in the new chief executive designate, the official stated that Sam Hou Fai is expected to unite and lead the new government and the people of Macao to “forge ahead with determination,” pursue innovation, and continue to write new chapters in the successful practice of the “One Country, Two Systems” principle with Macao characteristics.

The Liaison Office pledged to continue fulfilling its duties as entrusted by the central government, offering full support to the chief executive and the Macao SAR government in their lawful administration.

According to the Basic Law of the Macao SAR, the region’s chief executive is elected by a broadly representative Chief Executive Election Committee and is then appointed by the Central People’s Government.
