In a historic move, the Chinese nominee has been elected as the Chair of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Energy Working Group for the 2025-2026 term. The announcement was made during the recently concluded 68th meeting of the APEC Energy Working Group, according to a statement by China’s National Energy Administration on Saturday.
This election marks the first time China has secured a leadership position within the APEC energy cooperation mechanism. The success is seen as a recognition of China’s significant achievements in energy development by APEC member economies and underscores China’s deepening involvement in global energy governance.
The appointment highlights China’s commitment to advancing energy transformation, expanding high-level openness, and actively sharing development opportunities with the global community. China has pledged to leverage this new role to promote constructive and positive dialogue, ensuring the Energy Working Group’s objectives align with the directives of APEC leaders, ministers, and senior officials.
China has set ambitious goals to reach carbon peaking by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060. In recent years, it has accelerated the development of a clean, low-carbon, safe, and efficient energy system, achieving significant milestones in the energy sector. Concurrently, China continues to advance global energy governance reforms, promoting the establishment of global clean energy partnerships, forming the “Belt and Road” energy partnership, and advocating for an international energy transformation alliance.
By strengthening collaboration with all member economies, China aims to promote regional sustainable development and contribute its expertise and solutions to building a community with a shared future in the Asia-Pacific region.
Established in 1990, the APEC Energy Working Group is one of the 14 specialized working groups under the APEC Senior Officials’ Meeting Steering Committee on Economic and Technical Cooperation. Serving as a multilateral cooperation framework among APEC’s 21 member economies, the group aims to promote energy cooperation in the region and contribute to the economic prosperity and social well-being of the people in the Asia-Pacific.
