Australian Experts Warn of Unprecedented Triple Avian Influenza Threat
Australia is facing an unprecedented threat from three different strains of avian influenza, according to experts from the national science agency.
On Monday, Debbie Eagles and Frank Wong from the Australian Center for Disease Preparedness at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) warned that three strains of the highly pathogenic H7 avian influenza have been detected in Australia in 2024.
The outbreaks have affected poultry farms in the southeastern states of Victoria and New South Wales, as well as the Australian Capital Territory, prompting the culling of over 500,000 chickens.
The detection of multiple strains of avian influenza is a rare occurrence and poses significant challenges to Australia’s biosecurity and poultry industry.
Authorities are working to contain the outbreaks and prevent the spread of the virus to other regions.
