China’s central authorities have sent a heartfelt congratulatory message to the nation’s Olympic delegation, celebrating their outstanding achievements at the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics.
In the message, the Communist Party of China Central Committee and the State Council of the People’s Republic of China called on the athletes to remain focused on the goal of building China into a strong sporting nation. They encouraged them to strive for new heights in competitive sports and contribute to the realization of China’s modernization and the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
China finished the Games with an impressive tally of 40 gold, 27 silver, and 24 bronze medals. Marking a historic milestone, China surpassed the 300-gold medal mark since Xu Haifeng clinched the country’s first Olympic title in the men’s free pistol at the 1984 Los Angeles Games.
Deputy heads of China’s Olympic delegation praised the team’s exceptional performance during a press conference, highlighting it as the country’s best-ever showing at an overseas edition of the Games.
Zhou Jinqiang, deputy head of the delegation, emphasized the importance of participating in more events. “We made three breakthroughs in this year’s Olympics. First, we competed in more events. China has competed in 232 events across 30 sports, which is the most in any Olympics we have participated in overseas,” Zhou said.
“Second, we won more gold medals. The haul of 40 gold medals surpassed the 39 golds won at the London Olympics and the 38 golds won at the Tokyo Games. A total of 60 athletes claimed gold, marking a new record for overseas Olympic participation. Third, we topped the podium in a greater variety of events. Fourth, the gold medalists come from more provinces across the country.”
Liu Guoyong, also a deputy head of the delegation, highlighted the swimming team’s stellar performance amid recent allegations from the U.S. regarding the fairness of doping tests.
“First, we accomplished the goal of ‘winning clean gold medals.’ Second, the Chinese swimming team is able to follow international rules and actively cooperate with high-frequency doping tests, with no positive cases detected. Third, the Chinese government emphasizes the importance of winning clean golds in a moral style, staying resolute on zero tolerance for the doping problem,” Liu stated.
