A Vibrant Homage to Xun Huisheng: ‘Hong Niang’ Lights Up Beijing’s Chang’an Grand Theater

On January 11, the Chang’an Grand Theater in Beijing hosted a special performance to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the birth of Peking Opera master Xun Huisheng. The event featured classic works from the esteemed Xun School, with a standout rendition of its signature piece Hong Niang (The Matchmaker).

The evening offered audiences a rare glimpse into the meticulous preparations behind the scenes. Actors were captured applying intricate makeup, arranging ornate props, and adjusting their elaborate costumes—all integral to bringing the historical characters to life on stage.

Hong Niang is a timeless work adapted from Yuan Dynasty playwright Wang Shifu’s Xixiangji, or The Story of the Western Wing, one of China’s most celebrated romantic comedies. Set during the Tang Dynasty, the story follows the scholar Zhang Gong on his journey to take the imperial exam. Along the way, he meets Cui Yingying, the daughter of a high-ranking official. Their blossoming love is assisted by the spirited matchmaker, Hong Niang, who plays a pivotal role in uniting the couple.

In this commemorative performance, Hong Niang was portrayed with vivacity and charm, embodying a passionate, kind-hearted, and courageous figure. Her secret efforts to aid the young lovers, even when confronted by the stern matron, showcased her bravery and righteousness. Her unwavering defense ultimately persuades the matron to bless the union, highlighting themes of love and determination.

The tribute not only honored Xun Huisheng’s enduring legacy but also celebrated the rich cultural heritage of Peking Opera. Through performances like these, new generations can appreciate the artistry and timeless stories that continue to resonate across Asia and beyond.
