China’s First Energy Law Paves Way for Green Transition After COP29 Breakthroughs

China’s commitment to environmental sustainability has reached a new milestone with the official enactment of its first energy law on January 1, 2025. This landmark legislation is a pivotal step in securing national energy security and accelerating the country’s transition towards a green, low-carbon future.

The timing of this development aligns closely with the significant breakthroughs achieved at the 2024 United Nations Climate Change Conference, known as COP29. Among the most notable outcomes of COP29 were the tripling of climate finance pledges to developing nations and the advancement of critical carbon market mechanisms. These global commitments underscore a unified approach to combating climate change and fostering sustainable development worldwide.

In a recent episode of BizTalk, CGTN’s Michael Wang engaged in a deep discussion with Siddharth Chatterjee, the United Nations Resident Coordinator in China, and Daisy Shen, Head of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) at KPMG China. The conversation centered on how China’s green transition is influencing the future landscape of climate finance, reshaping ESG practices, and enhancing international cooperation in the fight against climate change.
