Mawei-Matsu Lantern Festival Lights Up Fujian, Bridging Taiwan Straits

Southeast China’s Fujian Province is aglow as the Mawei-Matsu Lantern Festival, the first national intangible cultural heritage connecting both sides of the Taiwan Straits, kicks off in grand style. This year’s festival, marking its 23rd edition, brings together dazzling lantern displays from both the mainland and the Taiwan region, celebrating the shared traditions of the Chinese New Year.

For the first time, the festival has been upgraded to coincide with the inaugural “World Intangible Cultural Heritage Edition” of the Spring Festival, extending its festivities to a record 53 days. Visitors are treated to a spectacular fusion of art and culture, with intricate lanterns illuminating the night sky, symbolizing unity and hope across the strait.

“The Mawei-Matsu Lantern Festival is more than just a celebration of light; it’s a bridge of cultural exchange and mutual appreciation,” said an organizer of the event. “We are delighted to showcase the rich heritage and foster connections between people on both sides.”

The festival not only revives traditional customs but also attracts tourists, cultural enthusiasts, and academics interested in the intangible cultural heritage of the region. With an array of activities including lantern exhibitions, folk performances, and interactive workshops, the event offers an immersive experience into the vibrant tapestry of Chinese culture.

As the lanterns continue to shine brightly, lighting up the hearts of thousands, the Mawei-Matsu Lantern Festival stands as a testament to the enduring bonds and shared heritage between the mainland and the Taiwan region.
