At 9:05 a.m. on Tuesday, a magnitude-6.8 earthquake jolted Dingri County in the city of Xigaze, southwest China’s Xizang Autonomous Region. As of Tuesday night, at least 126 people have been confirmed dead and 188 others injured.
Lyu Yuhong, a driver for the China Railway Design Group Co., Ltd. working group in Lhasa, witnessed the earthquake firsthand. In this video, he recalls the moment the earthquake struck and shares his volunteering story. “The situation at the earthquake site is dire. Fortunately, there were no casualties in the village we went to,” he recalls.
Lyu immediately joined local relief efforts, assisting in transporting supplies and helping residents find safe shelter. “Every second counts in such situations,” he says. “Seeing everyone come together to support each other is truly heartwarming.”
The earthquake has caused significant damage to infrastructure in the affected areas, with rescue teams working tirelessly to reach those in need. Local authorities have mobilized resources to provide medical aid, temporary housing, and essential supplies to the survivors.
Lyu’s dedication highlights the community spirit prevalent among the residents and volunteers in Xizang during this challenging time. “We are doing everything we can to help rebuild and support those affected,” he emphasizes.
Relief efforts continue as more volunteers and aid organizations arrive in the region. The government has called for solidarity and cooperation to overcome the aftermath of the disaster.
