China has announced a groundbreaking plan to establish a comprehensive and continuous prevention and control system for senile dementia by 2030. Recognizing the growing number of elderly patients with dementia, the initiative aims to create an integrated approach encompassing prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, and care.
The action plan, jointly issued by fifteen authorities including the National Health Commission, the National Development and Reform Commission, and the Ministry of Education, proposes seven major tasks to address this pressing health issue. These tasks focus on promoting fundamental knowledge about dementia prevention and control, conducting early screening and intervention, increasing the availability of care services, fostering a dementia-friendly social environment, and strengthening international cooperation.
By 2030, China expects to have an improved standardized diagnosis and treatment mechanism in place. Cognitive function screenings for the elderly will be fully implemented nationwide, ensuring early detection and intervention. In addition, nursing institutions with over 100 beds and corresponding service capabilities are projected to have a 50 percent rate of setting up special care areas for elderly individuals with dementia.
A significant aspect of the plan is the ambitious goal to train 15 million caregivers specializing in dementia care. This move aims to enhance the quality of life for patients and provide much-needed support to families affected by the condition.
Experts believe that this comprehensive strategy will not only address the medical needs of patients but also promote social awareness and understanding of senile dementia. By building a supportive environment and improving care services, China is taking significant steps toward improving the well-being of its aging population.
